Quantum Bayes rule

چکیده
We state a quantum version of Bayes’s rule for statistical inference and give a simple general derivation within the framework of generalized measurements. The rule can be applied to measurements on N copies of a system if the initial state of the N copies is exchangeable. As an illustration, we apply the rule to N qubits. Finally, we show that quantum state estimates derived via the principle of maximum entropy are fundamentally different from those obtained via the quantum Bayes rule. Typeset using REVTEX

A Bayes Rule for Density Matrices
The classical Bayes rule computes the posterior model probability from the prior probability and the data likelihood. We generalize this rule to the case when the prior is a density matrix (symmetric positive definite and trace one) and the data likelihood a covariance matrix. The classical Bayes rule is retained as the special case when the matrices are diagonal. In the classical setting, the ...
متن کاملOn Empirical Bayes Selection Rules for Negative Binomial Populations ( Unclassified ) 12 . PERSON / VL AUTHOR ( S )
This paper deals with the problem of selecting good negative binomial populations as compared with a standard or a control. The main results are based on the use of the empirical Bayes approach. First we derive the monotone empirical Bayes estimators of the concerned parameters. Based on these estimators, we construct monotone empirical Bayes selection rules. Asymptotic optimality properties of...
متن کاملA Quantum Bayes Net Approach to Causal Reasoning
When individuals have little knowledge about a causal system and must make causal inferences based on vague and imperfect information, their judgments often deviate from the normative prescription of classical probability. Previously, many researchers have dealt with violations of normative rules by elaborating causal Bayesian networks through the inclusion of hidden variables. While these mode...

We propose a simple abstract formalisation of the act of observation, in which the system and the observer are assumed to be in a pure state and their interaction deterministically changes the states such that the outcome can be read from the state of the observer after the interaction. If the observer consistently realizes the outcome which maximizes the likelihood ratio that the outcome perta...
متن کاملWeak Values and Relational Generalisations
We justify generalisations of weak values from a tentatively relational perspective by deriving them from a generalisation of Bayes’ rule. We also argue that these generalisations have implications of quantum nonlocality and may form a novel approach to quantum gravity and cosmology.
